SEP for Social Security Phone Challenges

Beginning on January 1^, 2022, the Social Security Administration has experienced problems with its phone system. This issue has resulted in beneficiaries not being able to enroll in Medicare Part and Part B in the timeframe required for enrollment.

For those of your clients who turn 65 this year, they may qualify for a special enrollment period, and will have the late enrollment penalties waived if:

• They’re eligible to sign up for Medicare between January 1, 2022, and December 30, 2022, and were unable to because of the problems with the Social Security phone system.
• They haven’t signed up for Medicare yet.
