Ben Houck October Gamechanger
Ben Houck may be only 25 years old, but that hasn’t stopped him from cultivating a strong Medicare book of business.
“I have a two-year-old and a two-month-old,” Ben said. “Many of my clients have grandchildren that age, so we have some common ground.”
Ben got his start in the Medicare world when an opportunity arose at his father-in-law’s business, Serra Benefits Group. He had been working an hour away from home, which is where his degree in social work led him after college. Switching gears, he joined the Serra Benefits Group and never looked back.
“I like it way better than what I was doing before,” said Ben. “I really like that there is a need for what I do. People are very confused about Medicare and I can help them. And I’m closer to home, which is important to me so I can spend more time with my family.”
Ben credits a coworker for being his mentor when he first arrived. Her book of business included everything – life, health, auto, home – but she did a lot with the senior market and Ben paid attention. He learned how to seek clients in a number of ways even though the majority of his have come organically to him through his group business. He’s excited to see what this year’s Annual Election Period (AEP) will bring. He’s been working with Libby Elliott, his broker sales agent at UIG, and says she helps him be more efficient.
“If I’m having a problem, I get everything together and I email Libby,” Ben said. “This frees up my time to continue working. I’m always confident that she will have the answer for me, or knows where to get the answer. This helps me to be able to work while she gets me what I need.”
Ben and Serra Benefits Group have been UIG clients for just over a year. Ben says he’s been pleased with the relationship so far and also really likes the online quoting tool.
“It’s great for presenting different plans to people and it’s easy to use. I like that a lot.”
This is a learning year for Ben and going forward, he will be the only one at his agency who will be focusing on Medicare. He knows it’s not going to be easy, but he’s excited to try different marketing efforts to pursue new Medicare clients going forward.
“I’m excited to see what the future holds,” Ben said.
